A post for posterity. I want to note the decent places I've eaten at.
London:
La Trompette - http://www.latrompette.co.uk/ - French. Reservation. Stunning wine menu and knowledgeable sommelier. He led us away from a wine region I'd had my eye on - Ahr - when we mentioned we wanted what I call "obnoxious". We ended up with a red from Austria, I think. Food was perfect. Service was great. I got there way before my dining partners. They sat me early and rather than having to sit there alone looking bored they fetched me a newspaper so I could read. That was a first.
Dublin:
L'Gueuleton - Tucked on alley off Georges street (somewhere between Yamamura and Jaipur) - French. Have to get there at 6 to get in the door or on the list for later. They take no reservations. Fantastic. Second time I've been. All french wine list (we had a Bordeaux). I had the Toulouse sausages. Delightful.
Jaipur - http://www.jaipur.ie/ - Indian. Best food I've had in Dublin of any variety. Spectacular. The Duck Vindaloo was to die for. On Georges st.
Chili Club - Off South Anne street (off Grafton) - Thai. Pretty decent. Have to knock on the door to get in. Reservations required.
Yamamori - Georges st - Japanese. The noodles were great.
